which directors do you think are the most over rated?

Im not very good at reading movies, so maybe im missing all the wonderful subtle things they do, but on the whole theres a load of directors work that has left we me thinking... "it was good, but not amazing"

Put it this way, I could name about five director's who have a distinguishable cinematic style...

The rest are HACKS.

I'd say,

Sam Raimi
Terry Gilliam
Peter Jackson
Martin Scorcese
and I'd be tempted to put Kevin Smith (i.e. his lack of style) but his films are getting better with each DP.

Anyone else?

I'd say Tarantino man. Plus there are the ones like Godard, and Eisenstein, kinda paving the way... Maybe 5 that are working today.

Stanley Kubrick. I wasn't impressed with The Shining and I fell asleep when I tried to watch 2001. Twice.

He's the only director I can think of, but whilst we're on the subject of overrated, how's about John Williams. The man can compose a good theme, but his actual scoring is generic and indistiguishable from all his others.

Just my opinion

i must disagree... listen to A.I, Angelas Ashes, Shindlers List, and Indiana Jones.... veeeery different. Being a composer myself, I am in utter awe at this mans ability to spit out themes, and compose general background music with an amazing amount of innovation, subtle sound layers and mini themes.

Fincher also has quite alot of style...

Aron Afronosky (the director of Pi, Requiem for a Dream) has it's own style as well.

Hey there.

Michael Bay. Love him or hate him he has his own style.

As for overrated directors. One word. David Lynch.

Despin out.

I would say Tim Burton. Planet of The Apes was one of the worst films I've ever seen.

The likes of Sleepy Hollow, Mars Attacks et all suggest that he has an inablity to tell a story of any kind. Hey if you got gothic visuals, who needs a story?

Edward Scissorhands, Ed Wood and (maybe) Batman are better efforts but quite flawed all the same.

Kevin Smith is another one. Just for sheer lack of visual style. His movies rely completley on whether or not you're in tune with his sense of humour, and if you're not, theres very little else in the movies.
